Ants
Most ants are omnivores that feed on a wide variety of foods. Their diet can vary depending on what the colony needs and what foods are available. Protein is required for egg production and larval growth in spring and early summer. The colony's diet shifts to carbohydrates later in the summer to supply new adult ants with energy. There are about 600 native species of ants in the U.S., around 40 species infest structures and less than 10 are considered major pests.
